From Geoff Page – FYI

Hello Jazz in Concert at the Village supporters

It’s now just less than a month to the next Jazz in Concert at the Village (Wed Sep 6) featuring local piano legends, Wayne Kelly and Damien Slingsby paying tribute to the great jazz composer and improviser, Thelonious Monk (1917 – 1982). They’ll play, separately and sometimes together, a program of Monk compositions accompanied by Ben O’Loghlin (bass) and Mark Sutton (drums).

Some words from Wayne: ‘To be asked to perform for the hundredth anniversary Monk’s birth and play his unique compositions is an honor and privilege, a delight and a blessing for me, I’m very excited about this concert and am looking forward to be playing with my longtime friends Mark Sutton (drums) and Ben O’Loghlin (bass), Damien Slingsby will be the other pianist. In addition, Damien and I will play some duets and some solo piano Monk tunes. We’re delighted to embark on this adventure into the world of Monk!!!’

It’s going to be an excellent night, the third at our new venue. If you plan to eat the optimum time to arrive is probably around 6.30 and the music will start at 7.30. Food is available from several outlets just outside the concert hall from 6pm. Food and drinks (from the bar) can be brought in.

Please book by emailing me at this address and say if you want to book a separate table or join my tables up the front. There will also be a few armchairs in the front row (first in, first served).

Admission is still $22. Located on the left of the Street Theatre.

Bits and Pieces

Dear CJC members

Some bits and pieces for your information.

First up, our AGM is done and dusted for another year. All Committee members were returned unopposed. Jenny Madden is staying on as a general Committee member, however, she has relinquished her role as Membership Secretary. Many thanks to Committee member Esme Bracken for offering to take on the job. Garry Owen will continue with his webmaster duties. There was some good news for Secretary Linda Wiese – she has been awarded Life Membership.

Some of our members have booked a jazz cruise in 2018 with Jazz Australia. The retirement of Bob Barnard has meant some changes to the music line-up as detailed on the attached flyer. Co-ordinator Diana Allen has passed along that the cruise is almost full but that she has a few good spots left if anyone is still interested.

Reminder for our next gig at Jamison, Sunday 13 August, 1pm

We are looking forward to another great afternoon of swinging jazz & boogie piano at Southern Cross Club, Jamison this Sunday, 13 August.

Dr Jawbone & the Restless Souls is thrilled to be back with another gig for the CJC, this time with new drummer Mark Levers. This popular band, led by the very talented vocalist and sax player, Laurelle Nosworthy, is a mix of very experienced musicians who know how to entertain.

The good news is that the brilliant South Coast trumpeter, Peter Poole, will be playing with the band.

Peter was a surprise special guest with the band last year and the crowd loved his playing, including our favourite local trumpeter, Tony Thomas, who remarked about how well Peter plays that trumpet.

We are seeing amazing crowds at Jamison so don’t arrive too late if you want a seat near the band.

Music from 1pm to 4pm in the lounge. We have reserved the usual tables for lunch from noon.

See you there!

Radio tribute to the late John Sharpe this Tue 8 August 2017

Dear CJC members

Our “stars of the airwaves”, CJC members John Girdlestone & Cyril Monaghan, have prepared a tribute radio program to the late John Sharpe. John & Cyril are hoping people can find the time to listen in to their program “Jazz Odyssey” on Tuesday 8 August at 11.30am or the repeat program on Saturday 12 August at 7.30pm. Radio1RPH is broadcast on AM 1125.

Tune in to Radio Station 1RPH at 11.30am Tuesday 8 August (repeated 7.30pm Saturday 12 August) for a special Jazz Odyssey Program tribute to John Sharpe, who made a huge contribution to Canberra and Australian jazz and who passed away on 12 July. The tribute summarises his jazz career and features seven tunes selected from recordings that he made from 1969 – 2000.

John was the leader and trombonist of the legendary Fortified Few from 1969-1983 and continued playing gigs such as a few special re-convenings of the Fortified Few, Sharpie’s Blunt Instruments at jazz festivals and filling in for various Canberra bands.

He was the Chair of the Australian Jazz Archive National Council during which he interviewed most of the significant Australian jazz players of all styles and thus created oral histories for posterity. He wrote two books based on those oral histories and also a book on the history of Canberra Jazz. He was a life member of both the Canberra Jazz Club and the Canberra City Band.

Vale CJC Life Member, John Sharpe

Sadly, we advise that CJC Life Member, musician and jazz historian, John Sharpe, passed away peacefully on Wednesday 12th after a valiant two week battle in hospital. As many of you would know, John had struggled with a series of health issues following a stroke some two years ago and this latest battle was one he could not overcome.

2018 Jazz Cruise details

Dear CJC members

Diana Allen of Jazz Australia is organising her second jazz cruise and she has sent along information should any of us be interested. This cruise has just been released so she is advising people to book early.

Join Jazz Australia’s AUTUMN JAZZ CRUISE to the WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS and GREAT BARRIER REEF on the Sea Princess, April 21st – May 1st, 2018 from Sydney to Sydney.

Experience more than one of the great jazz cornet legends in history – not only Bob Barnard but Jim Cullum from the USA. Plus Stevenson’s Rockets Swing Quartet from Melbourne – Jo Stevenson, reeds; Stephen Grant, piano; Chris Ludowyk, bass & trombone; and Ian Smith, drums, washboard & vocals.

The allocation of cabins for Jazz Australia bookings is limited so Diana is urging people to move quickly to avoid disappointment.

Please see the attached flyer for more information.
